Querying GPS Data for 4 Million Users and 9000 Golf Courses, Golfnow Provides a Hole-In-One Mobile & Web Experience for its Golfers

GolfNow, a division of NBC Universal Golf Channel and the world’s leading tee-time marketplace with 4 million registered users, needed a more scalable data platform to power real-time GPS tracking, distance-from-pin and score-keeping across 9,000 courses. Facing a migration from a .NET/SQL Server monolith to microservices, GolfNow selected CrateDB from Crate.io for its performance, data flexibility and ease of moving off the legacy SQL stack.

Crate.io’s CrateDB was deployed on Docker and Kubernetes to support GolfNow’s microservices architecture, enabling automated deployment, operation and scaling. The solution now handles real-time queries over more than 300 million rows hundreds of times per second, powering GolfNow’s live location features for millions of golfers and delivering measurable improvements in throughput and scalability.
