Case Study: Azienda Trasporti Bergamo achieves real-time overcrowding control and safer public transit with Cradlepoint's NetCloud Service for Mobile

During COVID-19 crisis, ATB used Cradlepoint’s edge solution to complete large-scale innovation project across entire fleet

Azienda Trasporti Bergamo (ATB), the public transit agency serving Bergamo and surrounding municipalities, needed to quickly adapt during the COVID-19 pandemic to prevent overcrowding and support emergency health protocols. ATB worked with Cradlepoint, standardizing on NetCloud Service for Mobile and ruggedized 4G LTE in-vehicle routers (IBR900) to extend its IoT initiatives for passenger counting, GPS/AVL and real-time public information.

Cradlepoint deployed NetCloud Service for Mobile, IBR900 routers and NetCloud Manager to provide persistent cellular connectivity for onboard sensors, AVL and digital signage. The result was continuous, real-time data (replacing end-of-service batch uploads), centralized fleet management, and actionable visibility that let ATB detect overcrowding, rapidly dispatch extra buses, update riders via displays and the app, and remotely manage devices—improving operational agility and safer social distancing across the entire fleet.
