Omdurman National Bank - Customer Case Study

Omdurman National Bank, a growing bank in Sudan with 460,000+ customers, needed a secure and reliable way to let customers pay for essential services, especially prepaid electricity top-ups, through a channel that would reach as many people as possible. The bank turned to CR2 and its BankWorld Mobile/SMS banking service to provide real-time bill payment via mobile phones.

CR2 implemented a BankWorld Mobile SMS bill payment solution that let customers preregister meter numbers and then send a simple text message with the meter number and amount to purchase electricity vouchers in real time. The request was processed online with the electricity provider, a unique validation code was returned, and the customer received SMS confirmation, with refund handling also available by SMS. Omdurman National Bank launched the service in 2011, becoming a pioneer in SMS-based electricity prepayment; the case study does not provide additional numerical impact beyond the bank’s successful launch.
