Case Study: Orange County, NY achieves a community-informed Comprehensive Plan using SMS signage with coUrbanize

Leveraging SMS Signage to Shape a Rural Community Plan

Orange County, NY engaged the Orange County Department of Planning to create a new County Comprehensive Plan and needed broad community input across a dispersed rural population. To reach residents and gather feedback, the County launched a project website on the coUrbanize platform and sought ways to drive traffic and participation in the online engagement tools.

Working with coUrbanize, the County deployed 30 physical SMS signage pieces linking residents to an interactive map and comment system; texts populated directly to the platform and were incorporated into the planning process. The effort generated 623 comments (61% positive), 1,753 users and 2,946 sessions, informed a new Transportation section, and produced draft plan documents in May 2018 that reflect the community feedback collected via coUrbanize.
