CNA, a leading U.S. commercial property and casualty insurer, set out to modernize procurement and third‑party risk after appointing a new Chief Procurement Officer. Before the transformation, procurement was largely tactical and paper‑based with siloed purchasing, contracting, and risk processes, which limited visibility and control over spend and made third‑party risk assessments labor‑intensive and hard to prioritize.

CNA partnered with Coupa to deploy a unified digital Business Spend Management platform (Source‑to‑Pay, Contract Lifecycle Management, TPRM, and analytics), consolidating risk domains and automating workflows. The rollout drove rapid supplier adoption and PO‑backed spend, enabled 91% of suppliers for invoicing and contract backing, tripled annual assessments, and delivered stronger visibility, agility, and decision‑making—especially during the COVID‑19 crisis.
