Case Study: Viber achieves massive scale and order-of-magnitude higher throughput with Couchbase

A Couchbase Case Study

Preview of the Viber Case Study

Viber Greater scale, better NoSQL

Viber is a global messaging, voice and video service with over 573 million users that needed to rapidly scale its backend in late 2013. The company had grown to a 300‑node deployment using MongoDB plus Redis but found that configuration could not meet rising throughput and scaling demands, prompting evaluations of alternatives like Cassandra and DynamoDB.

Viber deployed Couchbase in 2014 for its transparent sharding, higher throughput, and consolidation of caching and database tiers, which reduced the number of nodes required. As a result, Viber now handles hundreds of thousands of operations per second—an order of magnitude more than before—and uses Couchbase to support always‑available messaging for roughly 12% of the world’s mobile devices.
