PG&E, the California utility serving more than 16 million customers, needed to give thousands of gas and electric field inspectors fast, reliable access to customer accounts, infrastructure maps, safety data and service requests across a large geography. The company set out to build a foundational service-request and resource-management platform using a microservices approach to provide a single source of truth, improve mobile development agility, and support offline/online workflows for field technicians.
PG&E deployed Couchbase Server and Couchbase Mobile—leveraging in-memory performance, multi-dimensional scaling and XDCR—to power its video session/resource manager and Customer 360/Field Service use cases. The solution was quick to stand up and resilient, delivering consistent ~500 ms response times, seamless offline sync, faster mobile development, scalable field teams, improved asset and risk management, better safety and customer support, and lower costs for field work.
