United Airlines Modernizing flight operations with Couchbase

United Airlines, one of the world’s largest carriers operating over 4,500 daily flights, launched a “Crew Modernization” initiative to upgrade and modernize flight operations technology for 41,000+ pilots, flight attendants, and schedulers. The challenge was to consolidate data from multiple mainframe silos and deliver accurate, up-to-date information across devices, geographies, and time zones while meeting regulatory requirements for mobile applications.

United selected Couchbase Server and Couchbase Mobile to build a single foundational platform that synchronizes mainframe data, enables rapid development and deployment of FAA‑approved mobile apps, and improves employee experience and operational efficiency. The program now delivers timely flight information to pilots, simplifies tasks for flight attendants, and streams updates to personnel worldwide, with plans to expand Couchbase-based apps for customer synchronization, real-time agent updates, and gate display management.
