Sky, Europe’s leading entertainment provider serving 20 million customers across five countries, faced scalability and performance limits with its legacy Oracle RDBMS as streaming and sign-in demand grew. When their data center reached capacity, Sky began migrating critical systems—starting with its identity platform that handles sign-up and sign-in—to a distributed NoSQL architecture to handle spiky traffic and growing demand.

Sky moved to Couchbase, using cross-datacenter replication (XDCR) to migrate data reliably to multiple centers. The switch cut sign-in response time by 50%, reduced disaster recovery from hours to minutes, and delivered three years without a production outage; Sky is now expanding its internal Couchbase community and planning further migrations from Oracle.
