General Electric Digital built Predix to let customers create custom mobile apps for industrial assets, but ran into a classic IoT problem: massive, complex data from smarter machines and workers operating in remote locations with unreliable networks. Predix needed advanced caching, robust offline access, flexible data modeling, and reliable sync with legacy enterprise systems to support mission‑critical workflows on wind farms, oil rigs, rail lines, and power plants.

GE integrated Couchbase Mobile—using its NoSQL JSON model, local storage, Sync Gateway and APIs—doing a five‑day proof of concept and migrating core functionality in about 30 days. The result: Predix apps keep working offline with secure, automatic syncing when networks return, enable richer analytics and backend integration, free engineering resources to focus on platform features, and improve uptime and safety for field operations.
