Becton Dickinson (BD), a global medical technology leader, faced a major challenge in treating Type 2 diabetes: patients and clinicians lacked actionable, individualized data because data collection was burdensome and clinicians didn’t have time to sort through disparate information. BD needed a way to capture continuous patient data and present it efficiently for better diagnosis and treatment.

BD built a mobile patient app and clinician portal on Couchbase and Couchbase Mobile, using connected medical devices to automatically log insulin and glucose readings, activities, meals, and location. Couchbase Lite, Sync Gateway and a Couchbase cluster provide offline capability and secure synchronization to the cloud, enabling customized patient alerts and a consolidated clinician view. The solution made it easy to launch and evolve rules over time, delivering real‑time personalized insights and streamlining clinician workflows for more effective treatment decisions.
