Amadeus, the world’s leading Global Distribution System, manages massive travel data volumes—3.7 million bookings and 1.6 billion transactions per day, 45 billion database accesses and 13 PB of storage—with sub‑millisecond response targets and hundreds of developer changes daily. To support its SOA-driven business and eliminate service outages, Amadeus needed a low‑latency, elastic, persistent data store that could scale seamlessly and handle very write‑heavy workloads.

Amadeus implemented Couchbase for two critical applications: the Selling Platform Connect to offload ~0.5 TB of long‑lived web session data for 500,000 terminals (150,000 simultaneous users), and the Availability Processing Engine to replace 28 relational databases holding >20 TB and serving peaks of ~2M reads/sec and 400K writes/sec (avg object ~1 KB). Couchbase delivered the required sub‑millisecond performance, elasticity, seamless topology changes and persistence, reducing TCO, increasing scalability and maintaining a responsive experience for end users.
