Cisco’s @WeAreCisco team—a small, nimble employee-brand and social media group—faced the challenge of engaging 70,000+ global employees during the COVID-19 pandemic while preserving company culture, aggregating social data across hundreds of personal accounts, and competing for talent against large brands with limited resources.

Partnering with Conviva Social Insights, the team adopted a metric-driven strategy centered on employee advocacy and employee-generated content, prioritizing Instagram, Twitter, and LinkedIn and optimizing Instagram Stories with longer, storytelling formats. The approach (plus real-time dashboards and monthly reporting) tripled Instagram Stories views from early 2019 to April 2021, drove a 210.8% increase in replies over a 90-day year‑over‑year period, lifted average reach 26.6%, won multiple social awards, and helped elevate Cisco’s employer brand during the pandemic.
