Outreach International, a 30-year nonprofit tackling global poverty, faced low brand recognition and an aging donor base (mostly 65+). The organization needed a cost-effective, engaging way to reach younger, digitally active supporters and a compelling campaign “hook” to recruit and retain new donors online.
Working with Convio, Outreach launched a viral “Plant a Tree” Facebook application featuring profile badges, gift-forwarding, referral points and ranking rewards. Within six months the campaign built a new community of more than 1,600 Facebook supporters (about ten new supporters per day early on), generating sustained awareness, engagement and loyalty through targeted content delivered via supporters’ Facebook profiles.
