A Convio Case Study
The New York Public Library faced a proposed $37 million city budget cut that threatened closures or drastic reductions in hours across its 91 branches. NYPL needed a fast, effective way to mobilize patrons and the public to contact elected officials and donate to keep libraries open.
NYPL launched the "Don't Close the Book on Libraries" campaign, combining a viral Improv Everywhere Ghostbusters spoof with integrated email, social, print and PR outreach powered by Convio’s tools to drive advocacy and fundraising. The effort produced 130,000 letters to the City Council (20% online), more than $144,000 in online donations, nearly 28,000 online actions, 11,000 new email subscribers, 75,000+ campaign visitors and 2.6 million video views — contributing to the restoration of $27 million of the proposed cuts and keeping libraries open an average of five days a week.
