The American Red Cross, a large humanitarian organization that depends on volunteer support and donations, needed a scalable, secure online fundraising system that could support hundreds of local chapters, corporate and celebrity giving sites in multiple languages and reliably handle surges in donations during emergencies. Existing systems could not process high volumes, and the Red Cross also required stronger online engagement tools and fraud prevention.
Convio implemented email and online fundraising solutions ahead of schedule to meet Hurricane Katrina needs, providing a reliable infrastructure that sends more than 600,000 emails per hour, easy-to-launch corporate donation sites, and advanced fraud controls. In the first 20 months the Red Cross raised over $130 million online (average gift $154), launched 15+ chapter sites, 500 corporate giving sites, 43 celebrity-sponsored pages and a Spanish donation site, and delivered more than 72 million emails.
