Build.Com Utilizes Convey To Reduce Freight Spend By 20%

Build.com, the second largest online home improvement retailer, needed a better way to manage a fast-growing network of suppliers and a heavy drop-ship operation. Its static routing guide and limited carrier options were no longer enough to control freight costs, improve visibility, or ensure supplier compliance, leading to rising transportation spend and operational complexity. Build.com turned to Convey and its Initiate product to address these challenges.

Convey implemented the cloud-based Initiate platform to automate shipment requests, connect Build.com’s purchase order and carrier data in real time, and let suppliers approve shipments in batches while the system handled carrier selection, pickup scheduling, BOL and label generation. The rollout achieved 100% supplier adoption for targeted suppliers, 100% supplier compliance, and immediate freight savings, including a 10% immediate freight spend reduction and another 10% savings through carrier optimization for a total 20% reduction in freight spend. Convey also improved visibility, inventory predictability, and enabled proactive customer service through predictive delivery exceptions.
