Case Study: Zug achieves self-sovereign, government-issued digital IDs and streamlined e-voting with ConsenSys

A ConsenSys Case Study

Preview of the Zug Case Study

Zug - Customer Case Study

Zug (aka Crypto Valley) needed a way to modernize access to e‑government services, improve data security, and streamline frequent direct‑democracy voting. ConsenSys answered with a pilot of self‑sovereign identities using its uPort decentralized identity platform on the public Ethereum blockchain to explore government‑issued digital IDs.

ConsenSys implemented uPort so residents could create private‑key identities, complete in‑person verification, and receive city‑signed verifiable Zug ID credentials. The pilot produced 350 registered digital IDs, 70 citizens voted remotely in a festival vote, and uPort‑enabled services (e.g., AirBie bike sharing) recorded 1,600 uses by 90 users — demonstrating verifiable, user‑controlled e‑voting, streamlined logins, and potential savings of millions in time and productivity.
