Reduce Emergency Room Length-of-Stay by 17% with Better Patient Flow

London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC), one of Canada’s largest acute care teaching hospitals with over 10,000 staff and 866 beds across three sites, faced chronic bed shortages, delayed surgery scheduling and slow patient transfers driven by a complex 15-step transfer process and fragmented communication. To improve discharge planning and patient flow while remaining within budget, LHSC engaged Connexall to modernize bed management and transfer notifications.

Connexall deployed a real-time notifications and bed-status solution that makes bed availability visible in the Emergency Department, automates transfer alerts and acknowledgements to porters and staff on wireless phones, and routes discharge and housekeeping notifications (with Cerner bed management integration underway). The Connexall implementation reduced average ED length of stay by 17% (from 5.4 to 4.5 hours), cut median admission time by three hours, lowered patients leaving without being seen from 5% to 2%, expedited transfers, improved nursing efficiency and produced auditable communication records.
