SumUp Scales for Success with a Data Mesh Built on Confluent Cloud

SumUp, a London‑based fintech serving millions of small businesses, faced growing data silos and a bottlenecked, centralized data platform that slowed innovation and delayed data‑driven decision‑making. To implement data mesh principles and move to an event‑driven architecture, SumUp adopted Confluent Cloud (the vendor’s fully managed Apache Kafka service) to democratize access to streaming data and reduce operational overhead.

Confluent Cloud enabled SumUp to deploy a decentralized, self‑service data platform with domain ownership and federated governance, allowing teams to publish and consume standardized streaming data products. The result: more than 20 teams now use streaming for real‑time use cases—fraud detection, personalized recommendations, transaction updates—improved resilience and faster insights, and a significant reduction in the data platform team’s infrastructure burden thanks to Confluent.
