NORD/LB Supports Multi-Year, Bank-Wide IT Transformation with Confluent

NORD/LB, one of Germany’s leading commercial banks with EUR 126 billion in assets, launched the multi-year NORD/LB 2024 transformation — a roughly €500 million program to modernize IT and digital services. The bank struggled with siloed data, slow, resource-heavy point-to-point integrations, and limited access to data for analytics across departments, and selected Confluent’s event-streaming platform (based on Apache Kafka) to form the backbone of a new core banking platform.

Confluent implemented an event-driven architecture, running a proof-of-concept integrating multiple real-time sources, providing a Pathfinder workshop and ongoing professional services to accelerate rollout. Confluent’s solution enabled real-time analytics, better fraud detection and customer retention, streamlined event-streaming adoption, and reduced streaming infrastructure duplication — with the potential to cut idle server spend by roughly 50% — while establishing a competitive differentiator for NORD/LB.
