Leading Online Delivery Service Increases Messaging Layer Throughput with Event Streaming and Confluent Cloud

Leading Online Delivery Service, one of the fastest-growing delivery services in the U.S., needed to increase throughput and reduce latency for interservice communication after outgrowing an SNS/SQS-based messaging layer. To address limits on message size, retention, and compression, the company adopted an event-driven architecture using Apache Kafka delivered as Confluent Cloud by Confluent.

Confluent replaced the legacy messaging layer with Confluent Cloud (hosted Kafka), cutting initial setup from months to minutes, eliminating much of the operational overhead, and reducing engineering effort. The migration enabled message retention, replay, and parallel processing for a product pipeline that handles multiple terabytes and up to 20 million messages per day, and more than doubled throughput (from roughly 20,000 msgs/sec to over twice that) while removing the need for dedicated in‑house Kafka management.
