A Confluent Case Study
Bank Rakyat Indonesia (BRI), the world’s largest microfinance institution with about 75 million customers, set out to accelerate a digital transformation to extend financial inclusion across Indonesia. Faced with slow, synchronous processes that delayed fraud detection, credit scoring and loan disbursement, BRI adopted an event-driven approach using Confluent Platform and Apache Kafka to move from batch/warehouse-dependent workflows to real-time, asynchronous microservices.
Confluent worked with BRI to implement an event-driven architecture (KSQL, Kafka Streams, Confluent Replicator) that powers real-time credit scoring, fraud detection, an ISO 27001–certified open API and the Pinang microlending app. As a result, fraud is detected and blocked in real time, loan disbursements dropped from two weeks to two minutes, agent banking sales tripled, defaults are predicted proactively with NPLs near 0%, and integrations that once took months now move to production in under an hour — all enabled by Confluent.
