A Comsol Case Study
Zeeko Ltd, a UK manufacturer of ultra-precision corrective polishing machines, faced a critical challenge: fluid jet polishing (FJP) produced unacceptable mid- and high-spatial-frequency waviness (typically >10 nm Ra) on optical components that had previously required slow, skilled hand finishing. To overcome this, Zeeko worked with Comsol, using COMSOL Multiphysics to model the multiphase jet, particle trajectories and pressure instabilities and to target a surface roughness goal near 1 nm Ra.
Using Comsol’s COMSOL Multiphysics models (k-ω turbulence, level set/phase field, Particle Tracing Module and Fourier analysis) Zeeko identified pump-induced pressure patterns and optimized the slurry delivery (adding a low-pressure feed pump, inverter-linked pressure feedback, and refined nozzle/stand-off parameters). The changes reduced Ra on a 5 × 5 mm BK7 test from 12.5 nm to 1.2 nm, cut a day-long hand process down to ten minutes, and enabled Zeeko to commercialize the solution for major optics manufacturers.
