Yale University develops a fast, low-cost MEMS bacteria detector with Comsol

Yale University faced the challenge of detecting bacteria in blood samples quickly and cost-effectively to improve food safety. Existing methods were either too slow for the fresh food industry or too expensive for routine use. To address this, Professor Mark Reed's team used Comsol Multiphysics software from vendor Comsol to develop a new MEMS-based detector.

Using Comsol Multiphysics, researcher Monika Weber simulated and optimized the microfluidics and particle tracing for the device, named the α Screen. This solution resulted in a award-winning design that won the 2011 NASA Tech Briefs Create the Future Design Contest, paving the way for a fast, accurate, and affordable bacteria detection method.
