Veryst Engineering optimizes sea floor energy harvesting with Comsol, generating a few watts from ocean currents

Veryst Engineering faced the challenge of powering ocean floor sensors used in naval and environmental monitoring. The high cost of maintaining and replacing these battery-powered sensors with ship-based services was prohibitively expensive. They needed a way to harvest energy from the constant, low-speed currents found on the sea floor to create a self-powered solution.

Using COMSOL Multiphysics software, Veryst developed and optimized a novel energy harvesting device. The solution involved a bluff body to create vortices and a vane that converts this alternating motion into power. The simulations from Comsol enabled precise design optimization, such as determining the ideal vane placement to maximize energy output. This allowed Veryst to reliably model the complex multiphysics interactions and validate a design that can harvest watts of power, making the maintenance-free operation of submerged sensors feasible.
