A Comsol Case Study
VDEh-Betriebsforschungsinstitut (bfi), a leading European research institution for iron- and steelmaking technology, sought to improve the efficiency of the iron ore sintering process. This step involves baking a powdered mix of iron ore and fuel at high temperatures, and the challenge was to accelerate the combustion to increase overall production speed. To address this, they turned to Comsol and its COMSOL Multiphysics® software.
Using simulation support from Comsol, bfi was able to determine an optimal configuration for permeability bars within the reactor bed. This solution improved air supply to the fuel, which significantly sped up combustion. The implementation resulted in a measurable impact, with Comsol's solution enabling an increase in sinter speed of up to 40%.
