A Comsol Case Study
The University of Copenhagen, representing a multidisciplinary project team, faced the challenge of managing rooftop rainwater runoff in a dense urban neighborhood without overloading the city's sewer system, all while creating an infrastructure that was both functional and aesthetically acceptable to residents. To develop this sustainable urban drainage system (SUDS), the team engaged Comsol and utilized the COMSOL Multiphysics® software for simulation-driven design.
Comsol's multiphysics simulation software was used by a consulting structural engineer to analyze and validate the complex design of an urban green screen, which combined a steel frame, mineral wool blocks for water evaporation, and a willow-sheathed facade. This solution, built by Pilebyg, successfully created a multi-purpose structure that disperses rainwater, acts as a noise barrier, and enhances green space. The completed project mitigates sewer overflows, reduces traffic noise for residents, and has been positively received by the community.
