University of Bristol models moth wing resonances with Comsol, matching LDV results within 1.0%

The University of Bristol sought to understand the unique acoustic camouflage properties of moth wings, which allow them to evade detection by bats' echolocation. Their challenge was to model and analyze the complex vibroacoustic phenomena of these microscale wing structures to test their hypothesis that they act as resonant absorbers.

Using COMSOL Multiphysics software with its LiveLink for MATLAB, the researchers created a parameterized model of a single moth scale unit cell. The Periodic boundary condition feature allowed them to efficiently simulate an entire array of scales. The simulation results for the scale's vibrational resonances showed good agreement with experimental laser Doppler vibrometer measurements, successfully validating their model. This work by Comsol provides a foundation for developing new ultrathin, broadband acoustic absorbers inspired by nature.
