TNO advances 3D printing material design with COMSOL multiscale modeling

TNO, the Netherlands Organization for Applied Scientific Research, faced a challenge in exploiting the anisotropic properties of 3D printing materials for product design, which was limited by traditional manufacturing methods. They turned to Comsol and used COMSOL Multiphysics simulation software to investigate virtual material design.

Comsol's solution enabled TNO to develop a multiscale modeling procedure. Using the software, researchers studied mechanical behavior in a unit cell, controlled material properties, and optimized local material distribution. This approach allowed TNO to successfully apply fully-coupled multiscale modeling to design both the geometry and material properties of full-scale 3D-printed objects for various applications.
