A Comsol Case Study
Tessera Technologies of San Jose developed Silent Air Cooling to replace noisy, ineffective miniature rotary fans in thin Ultrabooks. Facing a need to model ion generation, electrostatics, charge transport, fluid flow and heat transfer together, the team chose Comsol’s COMSOL Multiphysics for its flexibility to couple custom equations across multiple physics domains.
Using Comsol, Tessera simulated and optimized the core “blower” geometry and materials, then transferred designs to CAD for production; the result is a compact unit that fits in <4 mm cavities, operates below 15 dBA, requires no bearings, includes self‑cleaning features, and entered pre‑production with more than 140 related patents—demonstrating measurable noise reduction and thin-form cooling suitable for Ultrabooks and licensing to device makers.
