Technical University of Munich improves TEHL gear contacts with Comsol's TriboMesh simulation app

The Gear Research Centre at the Technical University of Munich sought to improve the power density, efficiency, and noise-vibration-harshness behavior of thermal elastohydrodynamically lubricated (TEHL) gear contacts, a complex system involving interconnected heat, mechanical, and fluid phenomena. They enlisted the vendor Comsol and used multiphysics simulation to create a mathematical model to address this challenge.

Comsol's solution involved turning the complex multiphysics model into a custom simulation application called "TriboMesh". This app packaged the sophisticated TEHL solution into an easily accessible tool, which was then shared interdepartmentally. This extended the benefits of multiphysics simulation within the research center, allowing for more efficient and widespread analysis.
