Sogin reduces storage humidity below 65% with Comsol

The customer, Sogin, faced the challenge of preventing corrosion in steel drums used for nuclear waste storage at decommissioned Italian sites. Maintaining a relative humidity below 65% was critical, but traditional HVAC systems were impractical due to high operating costs, maintenance needs, and space reduction. They turned to Comsol and used its multiphysics simulation software to model the environmental conditions.

Comsol's simulation enabled Sogin's engineers to model air flow and heat and moisture transfer, which informed the optimal layout for industrial dehumidifiers. This solution from Comsol reduced both the number of dehumidifying units required and the associated risk of corrosion, providing a more cost-effective and mobile alternative to a full HVAC system.
