SMS Concast models continuous casting with Comsol to improve steel quality

SMS Concast, a Switzerland-based company specializing in continuous casting technology for steel production, faced the challenge of optimizing its process to minimize impurities and improve the quality of the steel. To better understand the complex physics involved, they turned to the vendor Comsol and used COMSOL Multiphysics software to model their systems.

Using the solution from Comsol, SMS Concast was able to model coupled physics phenomena that were previously impossible to study, including mechanical deformations, fluid flow of molten steel, heat transfer during solidification, and electromagnetic fields. This multiphysics approach provided valuable insights that helped SMS Concast improve both their casting machines and the overall process efficiency for high-quality steel production.
