Simulation Software Brings Big Changes to Cable Industry

Prysmian Group, a world leader in energy and telecom cables, needed a more accurate way to design high-voltage HVAC and HVDC systems that operate in harsh or thermally unfavorable environments without excessive safety margins. To replace simplified in-house tools and approximations, Prysmian adopted Comsol Multiphysics (vendor: Comsol) to model cable structures, installation geometry, environmental conditions, and transient load scenarios.

Using Comsol, Prysmian implemented parametric multiphysics models (thermal, CFD, electromagnetic, structural) that enabled transient analyses, geometry and material optimization, and virtual impact testing. The Comsol-driven workflow reduced physical prototyping and development time, improved design accuracy and material use, and has helped Prysmian generate new business, increase profits, and deliver better services to customers.
