Siemens Brazil reduces transformer hot spots by 40°C with Comsol

Siemens Brazil, a unit of the global technology company, faced a challenge in designing larger power transformers and shunt reactors to meet growing city power demands without increasing device size. This constraint led to increased thermal losses and the risk of overheating, which could degrade insulating oil and cause equipment failure. To address these inductive heating issues, Siemens Brazil employed COMSOL Multiphysics® software and the AC/DC Module from vendor Comsol for advanced simulation.

Using Comsol's multiphysics simulation capabilities, the design team at Siemens was able to model and control hotspots, leading to several optimized designs. Results included a 40°C reduction in the hottest points on a clamping frame, which eliminated the need for costly copper shielding. Additional design changes improved oil cooling circulation, reduced material and manufacturing costs, saved maintenance man-hours, and allowed Siemens to create the first real 3-D model of this equipment within the company, potentially making them the first transformer manufacturer to achieve this.
