Shell Global Solutions simulates lubrication contacts up to 4 GPa with Comsol

Shell Global Solutions UK faced the challenge of simulating complex lubrication problems, particularly in high-pressure environments like gear teeth and rolling element bearings, to develop more energy-efficient lubricants. Their proprietary simulation software was difficult to modify and limited in handling complex scenarios. They turned to COMSOL Multiphysics from vendor Comsol for a more flexible multiphysics modeling approach.

Using Comsol's solution, the Shell team was able to successfully model lubricated contacts for pressures up to 4 GPa without writing extensive code, simplifying model maintenance and modification. This allowed for the accurate simulation of challenging scenarios, including rough surfaces and viscoelastic grease lubrication, which is essential for predicting oil film thickness and friction in real-world applications.
