A Comsol Case Study
Sartorius, an international pharmaceutical and laboratory equipment supplier, faced significant challenges in the costly and complex development of biopharmaceutical devices. With only one in ten thousand drug candidates reaching the market, the company needed to accelerate R&D, reduce physical prototypes, and optimize testing. To address this, their in-house Computer-Aided Engineering (CAE) department turned to simulation software from the vendor Comsol, specifically adopting COMSOL Multiphysics.
Using COMSOL Multiphysics, the CAE team modeled multiphysics phenomena such as computational fluid dynamics, heat transfer, and fluid-structure interaction. This enabled efficient digital prototyping and design optimization. For example, in developing a new heat jacket for a bioreactor, Comsol's software allowed the team to derive an optimized design from simulation results, leading to perfect agreement with real-life experiments and the creation of only a single physical prototype. This approach sped up development, reduced prototyping needs, and supported innovation across Sartorius's biopharmaceutical device portfolio.
