A Comsol Case Study
The customer, Salzgitter Mannesmann Forschung, faced a challenge in improving the non-destructive testing of steel pipes. They needed to move beyond simply detecting flaws via magnetic flux leakage inspection to precisely quantifying a flaw's size and relevance, which was not previously done. They turned to vendor Comsol, using the COMSOL Multiphysics software with its AC/DC Module to analyze inspection signals.
Comsol's solution enabled the use of impedance boundary conditions to efficiently model the skin effect, bypassing the need for an impossibly large mesh in a full 3D simulation. This allowed the team to analyze signals from samples with predefined flaws and create a qualitative reference framework for real-world inspections. The results provided a new ability to interpret flaw severity from factory floor signals, advancing the customer's testing methodology.
