Ritsumeikan University improves lake water treatment with Comsol microbubble simulations

Ritsumeikan University faced the challenge of oxygen-deficient lake water, which contains high levels of toxic metals and organic material. This condition reduces the number of viable water sources and increases the strain on resources. To address this, the university used Comsol Multiphysics from Comsol to model and test a solution.

The solution involved using Comsol Multiphysics to simulate the optimal injection of oxygen microbubbles into a dam reservoir. The software modeled environmental phenomena like wind, water flow, and chemical reactions to predict the best depth and location for the bubbles. This process successfully oxidized metals and stimulated microorganisms to break down organic material. As a result, the team at Ritsumeikan University is now applying this effective water treatment process to other locations.
