Raychem RPG designs a modular power box 6x smaller with Comsol

Raychem RPG, an electrical equipment manufacturer, sought to redesign the bulky, traditional power box into a smaller, modular unit suitable for smart cities. The challenge was to reduce the size while managing electromagnetic forces, thermal loads, and structural integrity. They partnered with simulation vendor Comsol, using COMSOL Multiphysics software, to tackle these complex multiphysics problems.

Using Comsol's multiphysics simulation, the team designed an innovative busbar system with a 120° alignment to balance electromagnetic forces. They performed structural analyses to ensure the box could withstand extreme wind speeds and thermal analyses to optimize heat dissipation. The result was a market-leading, compact, and efficient modular power box that is thermally sound and includes smart features for remote monitoring, all validated through simulation by Comsol.
