A Comsol Case Study
Raychem RPG, an Indian company providing innovative energy solutions, faced the challenge of modernizing critical overhead equipment (OHE) components for the Indian Railways network. They needed to design a lighter, more sensitive autotensioning device and a less bulky modular cantilever to support new high-speed electric trains, all while meeting stringent safety standards and reducing component count.
Using COMSOL Multiphysics software for structural modeling and optimization, the Raychem team completely redesigned the components. The solution from COMSOL enabled them to reduce the autotensioning device's weight by 80% and its parts from 20 to 8, and the modular cantilever's weight by 33% and its parts from 12 to 5. These innovations led to four patents and a prestigious industry award for their foldable cantilever design, with one design already accepted by the Indian Railways Board.
