Raychem RPG cuts gas meter components from 35 to 5 with Comsol

Raychem RPG, a leading provider of domestic gas meters in India, faced challenges in optimizing new gas meter designs. Existing meters had limitations like component leakage, mechanical fatigue from many parts, and high rejection rates during quality testing. To develop more efficient and reliable meters that fit within standard enclosures, researchers at their innovation centre turned to multiphysics simulation software from COMSOL.

Using COMSOL Multiphysics and its add-on modules, the Raychem team validated and optimized four novel gas meter designs. This simulation-driven approach enabled them to significantly reduce the number of components—in one case from 35 down to 5 or 6—improve measurement accuracy and sensitivity, and design compact, self-energizing systems. As a result, COMSOL's tools helped Raychem RPG achieve designs with assured mechanical integrity that were shortlisted for production, aiming to reduce manufacturing costs and meet the growing demand for piped natural gas in urban Indian households.
