Prysmian improves high-voltage cable design with Comsol simulation in 0.57 MB case study

Prysmian, a global cable manufacturer, faced the challenge of designing reliable high-voltage cables for terrestrial and submarine use. Their key hurdle was optimizing cable geometry to deliver required power without exceeding maximum operating temperatures, especially under variable real-world environmental conditions. To address this, they turned to simulation software from the vendor Comsol, specifically COMSOL Multiphysics.

Comsol's solution enabled Prysmian's engineers to perform multiphysics simulations with transient analysis. This allowed for virtual design and testing of parameterized cable models under realistic, unfavorable thermal scenarios—like changing solar irradiation and current loads—that are difficult to replicate in physical experiments. By implementing this simulation workflow, Comsol helped Prysmian improve their cable design procedures, leading to more reliable products and enhanced service for their customers and internal teams.
