Promoting Industrial Innovation with Custom Simulation Apps

The University at Buffalo research group, led by Professor Edward Furlani, needed a way to share advanced multiphysics modeling expertise with industry partners and students who lacked specialist simulation skills. To make complex models accessible, they turned to Comsol, using COMSOL Multiphysics and the Application Builder to encapsulate validated models into simple, role-specific simulation apps.

Comsol helped the team build and deploy those custom apps on COMSOL Server running on UB’s Center for Computational Research, allowing nonexperts at companies like Vader Systems and Xerox to run analyses, iterate designs faster, and reduce costly trial-and-error. By simplifying deployment and updates through Comsol, the project broadened industry collaboration, enhanced student training, and accelerated product development across multiple projects.
