Polar Night Energy designs a sand-based heat storage system with Comsol, storing heat for 100 hours

Polar Night Energy, a Finnish startup, faced the challenge of reducing the country's heavy reliance on fossil fuels for heating buildings. To design a cost-effective and renewable heating solution, they turned to Comsol and used the COMSOL Multiphysics software for thermal modeling. Their goal was to optimize a novel system that stores solar-generated heat in sand for use during long, cold winter nights.

Comsol's multiphysics simulation software was essential for Polar Night Energy to model and evaluate different designs for their sand-based heat storage and distribution system. Using Comsol's tools, they optimized the system's efficiency, confirming their simulations were very accurate against data gathered from their operational pilot plant in Tampere. This solution allows the city to provide renewable heat to multiple buildings, significantly reducing the consumption of nonrenewable heating fuels.
