A Comsol Case Study
Nestlé, a global food and beverage company, faced challenges in optimizing its confectionery production processes to ensure product consistency, quality, and manufacturing efficiency. To address issues with chocolate flow uniformity, wafer baking temperature distribution, and cereal extruder design, Nestlé's Product Technology Centre partnered with Comsol and utilized the COMSOL Multiphysics software for multiphysics simulation.
Comsol's solution enabled Nestlé to accurately model the non-Newtonian flow of chocolate, leading to a depositor redesign that achieved a chocolate flow rate consistent to within 0.1% across all nozzles. For wafer baking, simulation helped optimize heat distribution to improve product texture and reduce fuel consumption. Comsol also assisted in redesigning an extruder's viscometer housing to withstand high pressure, ensuring consistent cereal quality. These efforts resulted in more precise nutritional content, safer equipment designs, and greater overall manufacturing efficiency for Nestlé.
