A Comsol Case Study
The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) faced an economic barrier to widespread biofuel adoption, as the conversion process via pyrolysis was not fully understood. To optimize reactor design for mass production, NREL researchers needed to develop a highly accurate computational model that could simulate the complex heat and mass transfer within the unique microstructure of biomass particles.
Using COMSOL Multiphysics software, NREL created a precise 3D model of biomass geometry that incorporated internal microstructure, a significant improvement over previous simplified models. The COMSOL solution enabled simulations of conjugate heat transfer and mass transport, providing crucial insight that justified the need for microstructured models. These findings are being used to determine effective correlations for optimizing large-scale reactor design and operation, a key step towards making biofuel production more efficient and cost-effective.
