NASA Marshall Space Flight Center saves 85% of water with Comsol

The customer, NASA Marshall Space Flight Center, faced the challenge of ensuring astronaut safety by revitalizing the atmosphere in manned spacecraft. They needed a system to efficiently collect water from the atmosphere for re-use. They used Comsol Multiphysics software from the vendor Comsol to address this.

Comsol's solution involved simulating gas flow and heat transfer in a four-bed Isothermal Bulk Dessicant system. The Comsol model tracked flow rates, pressure conditions, and water concentration. This simulation predicted that the system would successfully save 85% of the water from the atmosphere, a significant measurable impact that supports the goal of enabling farther space travel.
