MIT redesigns microreactor for successful synthesis with COMSOL after microwave heating fell below target temperature

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) faced a challenge in developing a microreactor for organic synthesis using microwave heating. A researcher found that the initial borosilicate glass reactor design resulted in uneven and insufficient heating, which inhibited the crucial chemical processes. To address this, MIT used multiphysics simulation software from the vendor, Comsol, specifically COMSOL Multiphysics, to model and investigate the problem.

Comsol's software enabled the researcher to simulate the microreactor's performance and analyze the effects of its geometry and orientation within the microwave system. Based on these simulation results, the microreactor was successfully redesigned and its placement was optimized. This solution implemented by Comsol achieved the uniform temperature distribution and efficient heating required for successful organic synthesis.
